Nothing in nature is subtle when it wants something. Flowering plants have spent millions of years refining the art of seduction, and the Bird of Paradise is one of its most flamboyant results: blades of searing orange, a flash of violet, and a rigid green perch engineered to take the weight of a visiting bird. Every colour is a come-on and every angle is deliberate. The flower is built entirely around one encounter.
This sculpture treats that encounter as desire made solid. The bract, the structural green hull that bears the bird, is cast in dense, dark glass. Above it the petals are fused in sharp, translucent blades, flaring like a display that can’t be ignored. Each element is hand finished and bonded, so the whole piece looks like it is mid-gesture, caught at the moment of attraction.
Part of the Sex Life of Plants series, an exploration of the intimate, strategic and sometimes ruthless relationships between plants and their pollinators.
Details: Cast and fused glass, hand finished and bonded. [Add dimensions, weight, edition and year.]
